A Polk County court has ruled that Integrated Health Services at Auburndale are to pay $114 million in damages to the family of 76 year old Juanita Jackson.

Ms. Jackson died on the 6th of July, 2003 and the court ruled that it was Ms. Jackson's treatment at the center that led to her death. Ms. Jackson was said to have suffered injuries as a result of a fall and also suffered from pressure sores, overmedication, malnourishment, and dehydration.

The jury awarded $14 million in damages and an additional $100 million in punitive damages to the Ms. Jacksons family.

This is the latest nursing home abuse case in a short space of time as a Californian jury ordered a payout of $29 million to the family of a 79-year-old woman who suffered from mild dementia and died a few months later falling and suffering an undiagnosed hip fracture. She later died due to an infected bedsore.

The Ridgecrest Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Florida was also recently accused of, and investigated for, abuse of its patients.

This is a sad and disturbing trend and needs to be addressed immediately.
